Brisbane in Black and White
Brisbane is a city that can be very colourful, specially at night time when all the bridges and city buildings are lit up, however, I choose not to photograph it as it is.
Black and white photography allows me to see beyond the obvious so that I can capture form, emotion, darkness, silence and stillness of Brisbane Cityscapes and the river.
My photography is deeply influenced by light and how it interacts with the urban landscape. Early mornings and late afternoons cast long, dramatic shadows perfect for black and white. The occasional Fog over the whole city, reflections after rain, or harsh midday sun bouncing off glass buildings, each condition offers me a new opportunity to creatively explore with my camera.
I often use long exposures to introduce motion blur into a static city, making clouds stretch across the sky or water smooth out like glass. These techniques are more pronounced and poetic in black and white.
For me, black and white photography is about slowing down. It’s about removing distractions and focusing on structure, emotion, and atmosphere. Creating timelessness images.
Through MONOBRIS, I’m not just capturing photographs, but I’m building a visual archive of Brisbane seen differently. I hope my work invites you to take it slow, to look closer, and to find beauty in simplicity.
